Iwatani Naofumi es un joven universitario y otaku, que se ve transportado repentinamente a un mundo desconocido después de leer un libro de fantasía que encontró por casualidad. Él, junto a otras tres personas, ha sido invocado como uno de los Héroes Legendarios que salvaran al mundo de las “Oleadas de la Calamidad”. Desde ese momento, Naofumi, como el “Héroe del Escudo” deberá prepararse para cumplir con su destino. Pese a que inicialmente se siente menospreciado, Naufumi esta ansioso por iniciar su aventura en este mundo fantástico. Sin embargo, ese presentimiento se hace realidad cuando Naofumi es acusado falsamente. Despreciado y humillado; incluso por los demás héroes, las aventuras del Héroe del Escudo y su misión para salvar al mundo darán inicio con un corazón traicionado, lleno de odio y deseos de venganza.
